Success Stories: How Overseas Teachers Built Their Careers in the UK

Success Stories| iCan Teach UK

For many overseas teachers, the decision to move to the UK is more than just a temporary change — it’s the start of a fulfilling and long-term career. While some come for a year of experience abroad, others stay and rise through the ranks, taking on greater responsibilities and leadership roles.

In this post, we highlight real success stories of overseas-trained teachers who have built rewarding careers in UK schools — from classroom teachers to middle leaders and even members of the senior leadership team (SLT). Their journeys prove that with the right mindset, support, and professional development, international teachers can thrive and lead in UK education.

From Supply Teacher to Head of Department: Priya’s Story

Originally from India, Priya moved to the UK with five years of teaching experience. She started her journey as a supply teacher, which gave her the flexibility to learn the system while gaining experience in a variety of schools.

After securing a long-term role in a secondary school in London, her subject knowledge and classroom management stood out. Within two years, she was offered a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) for Key Stage 3 curriculum planning in Science. Today, Priya is the Head of Science, leading a team of eight.

Key to her success? Building strong relationships with her department, embracing CPD opportunities, and always being open to feedback.

Climbing the Ladder: James’ Move into Middle Leadership

James, a primary teacher from South Africa, arrived in Manchester with enthusiasm and a passion for child-centred learning. His first permanent role was in Year 4, where he quickly became known for his creative teaching style and collaborative approach.

He volunteered to lead a school initiative on improving writing outcomes — which not only improved student progress, but also gained recognition from the headteacher. Just three years after arriving, James was promoted to Phase Leader, with responsibility for Years 3 and 4.

He’s now completed the National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML) and is mentoring new overseas teachers.

His advice? “Say yes to opportunities, even if they scare you a little. Every leadership step starts with someone noticing your potential.”

From EAL Support to Assistant Head: Mariana’s Journey

Mariana, who trained as a teacher in Brazil, originally came to the UK to improve her English and work in education support roles. She began as a Teaching Assistant, supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL), before retraining through a UK-based teacher training programme.

After qualifying, she took on a role in a diverse inner-city school where her background helped her connect with multilingual families and students. Her leadership in EAL provision led to a TLR, followed by a promotion to Assistant Headteacher within six years of starting her UK journey.

What made the difference? A supportive SLT, a clear career plan, and a strong belief in the value of inclusive education.

Common Themes: What Helped Them Succeed?

Across all these stories, a few consistent themes emerge:

  • Professional development: Taking part in CPD, leadership training, and qualifications like the NPQ suite.
  • Positive school culture: Working in schools that value diversity and offer mentoring to new staff.
  • Strong networks: Building relationships with colleagues, joining teacher forums, and learning from others.
  • Resilience and adaptability: Embracing the challenges of a new system with an open mind.

Final Thoughts

Success in the UK education system isn’t just for those born and trained here. Overseas teachers bring unique perspectives, rich experiences, and a global mindset — qualities that are highly valued in UK schools.

These stories are a reminder that career progression is not only possible but actively supported when the right conditions are in place.
